They were descendants of Seminole Indians of the Everglades Region of Florida and Negro slaves who had run away from their white masters in Georgia and other states. When other tribes crossed into Texas from Mexico raiding ranchers and villages, Ft Clark near Brackettville, elicited the help of the nearby Seminole Indians as scouts.
