Magnum P.I. debuts, Texan has Leading Roll
On this date in 1980, Magnum P.I. premiered on television starting Tom Selleck as a well tanned private investigator, Thomas Magnum IV. Opposite Tom on the Hawaiian based detective show, was Texas born John Hillerman, as Englishman Jonathan Quayle Higgins III. Hillerman had to develop an English accent for his roll as Higgins, an accent so convincing that he once received a fan letter from a British Lord which included "You are a credit to the Empire". Now THAT's acting!
Hillerman had been acting since 1970, in dozens of television series. He played the part of a teacher in "The Last Picture Show" in 1971.
