Astro, Eddie Mathews hits his 500th Homer
HOUSTON Click Here to follow "Astros" back in Time (1967) Click Here to follow "Astros" forward in Time  On this date in 1967, Texarkana born Eddie Mathews hit his 500th home run, only the 7th player in major league history to do so.
   Mathews played most of his career with the Atlanta Braves, but in a tearful trade to the Houston Astros earlier that year, Mathews continued to show his slugging power.
   Later in the same season, Mathews was traded to Detroit, where he went on to play in the World Series, hitting 1 for 3 in his final Major League game.
   Eddie Mathews completed his career racking up 512 home runs, 100 plus RBIs in five seasons, played in nine All-Star games, and three World Series. In 1978, Mathews was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

Singer Julius Bledsoe dies in Hollywood

PORT ARTHUR   (1940)    On this date in 1940, actress Phyllis Davis was born in Port Arthur. Davis is best known for her roll as Beatrice Travis in Vega$. She appeared in many television series throughout the 1960s and 70s. She also appeared numerous times in Love American Style, Night Rider, and the Love Boat. In seven episodes of Magnum PI, she played the sexy Cleo Mitchell.
Woodrow Wilson (Woody) Guthrie born
OKLAHOMA CITY   (1912) Click Here to follow "Woody Guthrie" forward in Time  On this date in 1912, Folk singer Woodrow Wilson "Woody" Guthrie was born in Oklahoma. During the Dust Bowl, his family moved to Pampa, Texas, where he met and married his first wife, Mary Jennings. LBJ gets VP nod
WASHINGTON DC Click Here to follow "LBJ" back in Time(1960)Click Here to follow "LBJ" forward in Time  In a suprise move, Democratic Presidential nominee, John F Kennedy on this date in 1960, selected Texas Senator Lyndon B Johnson as his Vice Presidential running mate. By selecting Johnson, Kennedy hoped to solidify the Southern (Democratic) conservative vote.
   Kennedy and Johnson went on to win the 1960 Presidential election, defeating Richard Nixon, in one of the closest elections in American History.

Howard Hughes plane sets Round the World Record
HOUSTON Click Here to follow "Howard Hughes" back in Time (1938) Click Here to follow "Howard Hughes" forward in Time  On this date in 1938, Howard Hughes and a crew of four in their special Lockheed 14, completed a round the world flight in a record 3 days, 9 hours, and 15 minutes. In addition, the New York to Paris portion of the flight cut Charles Lindbergh's record in half. Houston's airport would soon be renamed in his honor.

Congress approves Houston as US Port of Entry
WASHINGTON DC   (1870)    On this date in 1870, the United States Congress approved a bill making Houston an official Port of Entry for the US. The bill included funds to assist Houston in building a customs house, and surveys of a proposed ship channel.
