Having announced her retirement from Congress, Barbara Jordan announced on this date in 1978, that she has accepted a position as a Professor at the LBJ School of Public Affairs in Austin.
Jordan was the first black woman to serve as state senator in Texas. In Congress, Jordan served on the House Judiciary Committee and played a major roll in investigating the Watergate affair, which eventually led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon.
In 1975, Barbara Jordan was selected as the Democratic Woman of the Year.
