NACOGDOCHES   (1819)    The Nacogdoches Texas Republican, the first English language newspaper in Texas, began publication in Nacogdoches on this date in 1819 (only to cease publication in September, a month later).

Charter memberships for the new AFL were issued to Bud Adams of Houston, Bob Howsam of Denver, Max Winter and Bill Boyer of Minneapolis, Barron Hilton of Los Angeles, Harry Wismer of New York and Lamar Hunt of Dallas.
   By the time of the first draft in November, Ralph Wilson of Buffalo and Bill Sullivan of Boston would also join the new league.
   Sullivan would later comment "Before there was a player, coach or general manager in the league, there was Lamar Hunt. Hunt was the cornerstone, the integrity of the league. Without him, there would have been no AFL."

Davy Crockett marries Mary Polly Finley
JEFFERSON CO TN Click Here to follow "Davy Crockett" back in Time (1806) Click Here to follow "Davy Crockett" forward in Time  On this date in 1806, Davy Crockett and Mary Polly Finley were married at the home of her parents in Jefferson County, Tennessee. The couple had two sons and one daughter.
   After Polly's death in 1816, Crockett married his second wife, Elizabeth Patton, a widow, and together, they had a son and two daughters.

Gulf Freeway Opens to the Public
HOUSTON Click Here to follow "Interstates" back in Time (1952)    On this date in 1952, the Gulf Freeway opened between Houston and Galveston. This long awaited artery between these two major Texas cities, eventually became part of the Interstate Highway system (I-45).
