The History of HTML, p.2

To support his project, Tim Berners-Lee of CERN, proposed a new language be developed for the transport and rendering of hypertext documents. This language was to be a subset of the already proven open language called Standard Generalized Markup Language or SGML. Tim's new language would be known as HyperText Markup Language or HTML.

The protocol for handling HTML and other WWW documents was to be called HyperText Transfer Protocol or HTTP, which follows the Internet tradition of ending almost every protocol name with the letters TP.

The server then is called a HyperText Transfer Protocol daemon or an HTTPd, which follows the UNIX tradition of ending the name of any independent process with the letter d and using that spelling of daemon.
