Kenny Rogers pitches Perfect Game in Arlington
27 Up and 27 Down
On this date in 1994, left-handed pitcher Kenny Rogers of the Texas Rangers became the first left-hander in Americn League history to pitch a perfect game, that is 27 batters up, 27 batters down, no hits, no runs, no walks, no men on base.
At one point in the 7th, Rogers had a 3-ball count on each of three batters, but the first grounded out, the second popped out, and the third eventually was struck out.
Rogers was only the 14th major league player in history (from either the American or National leagues) to pitch a perfect game.
General Taylor brings news of Statehood to Texas
On this date in 1845, General Zachary Taylor arrived in Texas and immediately hoisted the American Flag. Congress voted just six weeks before to accept Texas into the Union, and the news had just reached Texas.
General Taylor's boat landed on St Joseph's Island near present day Beaumont, the first place where the American flag was officially flown in Texas.
Farrah Fawcett marries actor Lee Majors
On this date in 1973, young actress and native Texan, Farrah Fawcett, married the star of "The Big Valley", and "The Six Million Dollar Man", Lee Majors. Fawcett has appeared in several television series, including "Harry-O".
By 1976, Fawcett landed the roll of Jill Munroe in "Charlie's Angels". Three years later, in 1979, the Lee Majors and Farrah Fawcett separated, and Farrah began dating Ryan O'Neal (star of "Love Story"). Their relationship has continued ever since.
