Congress hears about upcoming AFL
WASHINGTON DC   (1959) Click Here to follow "AFL" forward in Time  On this date in 1959, NFL Commissionere Bert Bell, with the blessing of Lamar Hunt, mentions the efforts to organize a new football league, the AFL, before a Congressional Committee. At the time Bell appeared before the Congressional hearing, not a single dime had been committed to the new AFL, and Hunt was struggled to get Los Angeles and New York interested in starting new franchises.
   With the NFL commissioner's public testimony, investors took Hunt's new league seriously. Committments began coming in for cities wanting to field teams in the new AFL, and soon the league was born.

ARLINGTON Click Here to follow "Texas Rangers" back in Time(1994)Click Here to follow "Texas Rangers" forward in Time  On this date in 1994, left-handed pitcher Kenny Rogers of the Texas Rangers became the first left-hander in Americn League history to pitch a perfect game, that is 27 batters up, 27 batters down, no hits, no runs, no walks, no men on base.
   At one point in the 7th, Rogers had a 3-ball count on each of three batters, but the first grounded out, the second popped out, and the third eventually was struck out.
   Rogers was only the 14th major league player in history (from either the American or National leagues) to pitch a perfect game.

General Taylor brings news of Statehood to Texas
BEAUMONT Click Here to follow "Statehood" back in Time (1845) Click Here to follow "Statehood" forward in Time  On this date in 1845, General Zachary Taylor arrived in Texas and immediately hoisted the American Flag. Congress voted just six weeks before to accept Texas into the Union, and the news had just reached Texas.
   General Taylor's boat landed on St Joseph's Island near present day Beaumont, the first place where the American flag was officially flown in Texas.

Farrah Fawcett marries actor Lee Majors

Fawcett has appeared in several television series, including "Harry-O".
   By 1976, Fawcett landed the roll of Jill Munroe in "Charlie's Angels". Three years later, in 1979, the Lee Majors and Farrah Fawcett separated, and Farrah began dating Ryan O'Neal (star of "Love Story"). Their relationship has continued ever since.
