On this date in 1879, demand for telephone service in Galveston led to the opening of Texas' first Telephone Exchange. In 1877, the Galveston News installed a telephone between the local Western Union office and the Newspaper, and six months later, the owner of the paper, Col A.H.Belo had a telephone installed between the Newspaper and his home.
