Rev William Stevenson, TX First Minister dies
NEW ORLEANS LA    (1857)     On this date in 1857, William Stevenson, Texas first Methodist Minister died in Louisiana.
   From 1815 to 1825, Stevenson preached in the Arkansas territory, and at one point held the first Protestant service recorded in Texas at Pecan Point (now Red River Co.) At that time, only the Catholic church was permitted to hold services in Texas.

Cattleman Charles Goodnight born in Illinois
MACOUPIN CO IL   (1836)   On this date in 1836, Charles Goodnight was born in Macoupin County, Illinois. His father died of pneumonia when he was 5. In 1845, when he was 10, Goodnight's mother and step-father, Hiram Daugherty, took him to live in Milam County, Texas. Charles rode the entire 800 miles bareback on his horse "Blaze".
   Goodnight took pride that he was born at the same time as Texas, and that he came to Texas at the same time Statehood came to Texas. He became a Texas Ranger briefly, But his greatest accomplishment was that of a cattleman. He settled in Palo Duro Canyon, had a million acres of land and 100,000 head of Cattle. He and Oliver Loving blazed the Goodnight-Loving cattle trail from Texas to the railheads in Kansas.

CLARENDON (1927)  Following the death of his first wife, Molly, Charles Goodnight took ill. He was nursed back to health by Corinne Goodnight a 26 year old nurse with whom he had corresponded partly due to the similarity in both their surnames. On March 5, 1927, Charles turned 91 and celebrated by marrying the 26 year old Corinne Goodnight. Two and one half years later, Charles Goodnight died at 93 in Phoenix.

Henry Charles Trost born in Toledo, Ohio
TOLEDO, OH   (1860)    On this date in 1860, Henry Charles Trost was born in Toledo, Ohio.
   Son of German immigrants, Trost became an architectural draftsman. In his 20s, he moved west to Illinois, Colorado, Louisiana, Kansas, and Arizona. In 1903, he joined his brother in El Paso, and with a third brother, began a very successful architectural and building firm.
   Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Trost designed dozens of landmark buildings in El Paso and elsewhere, creating the Southwest style of architecture. His accomplishments include schools, libraries, hotels, office buildings, and dozens of landmarks residences in the region.
  In all, more that twenty buildings in downtown El Paso were designed by Trost.
