On this date in 1854, aboard the Weser, approximately one hundred families arrived in Galveston from Pluznica and other villages of the Upper Silesian area of Poland. Before Christmas, they would arrive at present day Panna Maria and establish a Polish community and church. Panna Maria is the oldest Polish community in the United States, and the Catholic Church there is the oldest Polish Catholic church in America.
In 1860, as it appeared Abraham Lincoln would be elected President, rumblings began in Texas to call a convention to consider seccession from the Union. But only the Governor could call such a convention, and the Governor, Sam Houston, was against secession.
