On this date in 1877, the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway reached San Antonio. Formerly named the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railroad, the name and Charter were changed to lay rails to San Antonio instead of Austin (it's original destination). Within six years, the lines would extend to West Texas where it met up with the Southern Pacific Railroad near Langtry, becoming part of SP's New Orleans to Los Angeles "Sunset Limited" route.

Just two weeks before Texas seceded from the Union, a band of Texans led by Ben McCulloch seized the U.S. Arsenal at San Antonio, on this date in 1861.
