McCombs sells the San Antonio Spurs
SAN ANTONIO  (1993)   On this date in 1993, approval was given by the NBA for the sale of the San Antonio spurs by Red McCombs to a group headed by Bob Coleman and Robert McDermott. Both parties agreed to the sale back on Feb 19th, but on this date in 1993, the NBA gave it's final approval.   

Rights Stop at Primaries
AUSTIN  (1918)  On this date in 1918, Texas Governor W.P.Hobby signed his name to a bill giving women in Texas the right to vote in all primary elections and nominating conventions. It would be the following year before Texas passes the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote in all elections.

Constitution of the Confederacy is Ratified
AUSTIN  (1861)   On this date in 1861, the Constitution of the Confederate States of America was ratified by the Texas Secession Committee. Sam Houston had opposed Texas leaving the Union, just 14 years after joining it. Many German-Texans who gave up everything to migrate to the United States and Texas, were also opposed to sesession.
   Houston retired from politics to his home in Huntsville. Many who had settled in the Hill Country, were forced to enlist in the Confederacy. Many of those who refused attempted to escape to Mexico, only to be tracked down, and shot. Support for the confederacy was by no means universal in Texas.

COLLEGE STATION  (1959)   On this date in 1959, James E Rudder became the 16th President of Texas A&M University.

Popeye Statue dedicated at Crystal City
CRYSTAL CITY   (1937)    On this date in 1937, a six foot statue of Popeye the Sailor was dedicated at the 2nd annual Spinach Festival in Crystal City. During the height of Popeye's popularity in the 1930s, spinach consumption in the United States increased by 33%. Crystal City is the center of the Spinach industry in Texas.
