TCU Alum, Sam Baugh Retires From the NFL

OAKLAND CA  (1974)   On this date in 1974, the Oakland Raiders defeated the Dallas Cowboys 27-23, leaving Dallas with an 8-6 records, and for the first time in eight years, Dallas fails to make the NFL Playoffs.

Craig Biggio born in Smithtown, NY
SMITHTOWN NY  (1965)   On this date in 1965, Houston Astro outfielder Craig Biggio was born in Smithtown, New York. Biggio spent his entire major league career with the Houston Astros, being the first player in club history to reach 3,000 hits. At the end of the 2007 season, Biggio retired after 17 years in the major leagues. Biggio is the National spokesman for the Sunshine Kids Foundation, for children with cancer.   

Sam Baugh retires
WASHINGTON DC (1952)  On this date in 1952, the legendary quarterback, Sam Baugh played his final game with the NFL, as his Washington Redskins defeated of Philadelphia.
   At TCU, Baugh changed college football by making the pass a formidable weapon. He led TCU to a National Championship in 1936.
   The Redskins drafted Baugh in the first round before their move from Boston to Washington. On his first day at training camp (as the legend goes) coach Dutch Flatery sent one of his receivers down field, then brought Baugh over, and told him "I hear you throw good. Well see that man down there. I want you to hit him in the eye." Looking down field, Baugh replied, "Which eye, Coach?".
   Over the next 15 years, Sam Baugh quarterbacked the Redskins to numerous national championships, and regularly led the NFL in passing and overall offense. Baugh, however, played both offense and defense, and also lead the league in defensive interceptions several times.
   In his final game, Baugh did not play at quarterback. Eddie LeBaron was the starting quarterback, and Baugh played on defense.
   In 1963, Sam Baugh was among the first class of inductees in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. He died December 17, 2008 at the age of 97.

AUSTIN  (1844)   On this date in 1844, Sam Houston ends his second term as President of Texas. He and family plan to retire to Raven Hill plantation east of Huntsville.

EL PASO   (1952)    On this date in 1952, KROD, Channel 4 in El Paso (now KDBC) began broadcasting as an affiliate of the CBS television network.
