Antones Nightclub Opens in Austin

Ryan pitches his Second No-hitter
DETROIT MI  (1973)   During the 1973 season, Nolan Ryan pitching for the California Angels was unstoppable. He racked up 21 wins (a career best), and struck out 383 batters against only 172 walks.
   That season, Ryan went 4-0, against the Detroit Tigers, striking out 44 batters in 39 innings. But on this date in 1973, against Detroit, Ryan pitched his best game of the year, a no-hitter, beating the Tigers 6-0.
   In the bottom of the ninth inning, the final batter, first baseman Norm Cash came to the plate carrying a wooden table leg in place of his bat. Cash told the umpire that he figured he had about as much chance of making contact with that as he did his bat.
   Nonetheless, Cash did make contact (with his bat), he popped out to the short-stop, Rudy Meoli for the game's final out. The table leg incident was a tribute to the faster recorded pitcher in baseball history, Nolan Ryan.   

Antones Opens
AUSTIN (1975)  On this date in 1975, Clifford Antone, a University of Texas drop out, opened a nightclub at Sixth and Brazos in Austin. The location eventually moved to West 5th.
