Cattleman, Hotel founder, Jesse Driskill dies
AUSTIN  (1890)     On this date in 1890, just two years after a spring freeze wiped out much of Texas Cattle industry, cattleman Jesse Driskill died of a stroke in his Austin home.
   In 1886, Driskill founded the famed hotel in Austin which bears him name, but due to the freeze of 1888, Driskill was forced to sell the hotel, unable to continue the payments. Driskill was 65.

SAN ANTONIO   (1916)    On this date in 1916, future Congressman Henry Gonzales of San Antonio was born.

Kentucky Derby Winner
LOUISVILLE KY (1986)   Texas born Willie Shoemaker, 54, won the Kentucky Derby aboard Ferdinand on this date in 1986. It was one of sport's most memorable achievements. Before retiring in 1990, Shoemaker rode 8,833 winners, 250 with purses of $100,000 or more. He also won 10 national money titles and over $123 million in purses.
   On April 8, 1991, a little more than a year after retiring to become a trainer, Shoemaker was involved in a one-car accident that left him paralyzed. In 1995, Ferdinand was sold to a Japanese breeding farm, and after several more years of successful breeding, his registration was annulled on September 1, 2002. He was soon sent to slaughter without any word to the prior owners.

ATHENS   (1946)    On this date voters in Henderson Co (Athens) approved the establishment a junior college. Henderson County Junior College opened for classes just one month later in June 1946.

President Johnson honors Polish Americans
WASHINGTON DC  (1966)    On this date in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson honored Polish Americans on the 175th anniversary of the constitution of Poland.
   Among those invited to the special ceremony in the Rose Garden were three representatives of Panna Maria, a Polish community in South Central Texas. The President presented the Polish American community with a mosaic of the Black Madonna - a copy of the famous Madonna of Czestochowa in Poland, made by Jan E. Krantz.
