Conjunto star Narciso Martinez born
REYNOSA, MEXICO Click Here to follow "Tejano Music" back in Time (1911)    On this date in 1911, the father of conjunto music was born in Mexico. By the age of 17, Narciso Martinez and his family had moved to Texas, where Narciso took up the accordian.
   By age 25, Narciso made his first conjunto recordings with Narciso on the accordian and Santiago Almieda on bajo sexto (a twelve string guitar). The comination became the foundation of conjunto music, and a new sound was born.    Throughout the 1930s, Narciso and guitarist Santiago Almieda made numerous records which became internationally popular.

Alabama Indians
LIVINGSTON  (1853)   In 1853, the Western frontier of Texas was still a struggle between Indians, Settlers, the the Texas Rangers. Not so in East Texas. On this date in 1853, the Alabama Indians of Texas petitioned the Texas Legislature for a permanent reservation. The result became the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation in Polk County - the only Indian reservation in Texas.
