The ballpark, built at a cost of $191 million, opened April 1, 1994. The construction was paid for jointly by the owners (29%) and the taxpayers of Arlington (71%). The stadium seats 49,170.
Normally, the two managers of the previous year's World Series, automatically became the managers of the league's All Star team. However, due to the 1994 baseball strike, there was no World Series in 1994, so the managers were selected from the teams with the best record, one from each league.
Nolan Ryan threw out the first pitch, and Lyle Lovett sang the Star Spangled Banner. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police presented the Canadian Flag, and the Del Rio High School ROTC presented the American Flag. Kenny Rogers and Ivan (Pudge) Rodriguez were selected as All-Stars from the Texas Rangers. Ryan's former team mate, catcher Craig Biggio, was selected from the Houston Astros.
In this, the 66th All Star Game, the National League won 2-1.
