Running to restore the reputation of her husband who was impeached as governor, Miriam A Ferguson (Ma Ferguson) wins a run-off election on this date in 1924, against pro Ku Klux Klan candidate Judge Felix Robertson of Dallas. This insures her election as governor, as Texas is essentially a one-party state.
(1963)
On this date in 1963, the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas was renamed Texas A&M University. The Texas Legislature in renaming the school was very specific that the "A" and "M" were now purely symbolic, a reflection of the schools past, and going forward no longer stood for "Agricultural and Mechanical".
(1971)
On this date in 1971, Lamar State College of Technology was officially renamed Lamar University. Founded in 1923, it was originally named South Park Junior College.
