Dallas oilman H L Hunt born in Vandalia Illinois
VANDALIA IL Click Here to follow "East TX Oil" back in Time (1889) Click Here to follow "East TX Oil" forward in Time  On this date in 1889, oilman Haroldson Lafayette Hunt was born on his dad's farm in Vandalia, Illinois. By 1920, Hunt owned 15,000 acres of timber and cotton in Arkansas and Louisiana. When cotton prices plumetted he got into oil trading, speculating on oil leases in Arkansas. He soon invested in drilling equipment, and by 1924, was worth $600,000. It was Hunt who helped to bail out the financially strapped Dad Joiner, who had discovered oil in East Texas, but unable to capitalize on it. This partnership led to a buy out in 1940, which eventually made Hunt a very wealthy man.
Much of the Ewing/Barnes rivalry on the televsion series "Dallas" was based on the Hunt/Joiner partnership and rivalries of the 1930s.

State Soverignty
AUSTIN  (2009)   On this date in 2009, Representative Brandon Creighton of Conroe, filed HCR 50, reasserting the sovereignty of Texas under the 10th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. In the weeks before, nine other states including Oklahoma and Washington had already passed similar resolutions.
Much of the issue stems from the federal government's distribution of funds to the states with strings (mandates) attached, or simply mandates with no money at all. These federal mandates became a big portion of President Obama's Economic Stimulus Package which became law earlier that same week.
Many state governors are refusing these federal funds because of the federal strings mandates which are attached to them. In response to the governors, President Obama threatened to force the various state legislatures to go over their governor's head, and require the governors to accept the funds transfers.
Throughout the country, resentment to increasing federal control over the economy and state power, has been increasing. On February 10th (just a week before), Newsweek Magazine published a full page cover with the headline "We Are All Socialists Now".
This month, eight states passed legislation trying to reverse that claim with a huge slap in the face to the federal government ... "Oh, No We're NOT!"
