On this date in 1861, Texas Secession Convention ratified the Constitution of the Confederate States of America, by a vote of 126 to 2 after almost no debate.
On this date in 1923, South Park Junior College is formed in Beaumont. The college has continued to grow and be renamed. It is now Lamar University.

On this date in 1893, the Fort Worth Stockyards are incorporated, eventually becoming the largest livestock market in the Southwest. At the time, Fort Worth had several Stockyards adjacent to the Texas and Pacific Railroad. Greenleif Simpson and others started a cattle empire in Fort Worth by purchasing several of the stockyards and a meat packing plants.

On this date in 1846, General Zachary Taylor reached the Rio Grande River. He and his men were sent to South Texas in response to threats by Mexico against annexation of Texas by the United States. A few days later, the men will begin construction of Fort Brown.

On this date in 1913, Lyne Barret, Texas first wildcatter died at Melrose In 1866, Barret brought in the first oil well in Texas at Oil Springs. Because of a sluggish economy during reconstruction, he was unable to attract investors to develop the oil field. Years later, others will drill at Oil Springs, and strike it rich.
