Julius Bledsoe's performance of "Ol Man River" in Showboat in 1927, made the song an American Classic. On this date in 1943, Julius Bledsoe died in Hollywood. He was born in Waco where he is now buried.
On this date in 1912, Folk singer Woodrow Wilson "Woody" Guthrie was born in Oklahoma. During the Dust Bowl, his family moved to Pampa, Texas, where he met and married his first wife, Mary Jennings. Woody is best known for "This Land is Your Land" which is a national favorite.

In a suprise move, Democratic Presidential nominee, John F Kennedy on this date in 1960, selected Texas Senator Lyndon B Johnson as his Vice Presidential running mate. By selecting Johnson, Kennedy hoped to solidify the Southern (Democratic) conservative vote.

On this date in 1938, Howard Hughes and a crew of four in their special Lockheed 14, completed a round the world flight in a record 3 days, 9 hours, and 15 minutes. In addition, the New York to Paris portion of the flight cut Charles Lindbergh's record in half. Houston's airport would soon be renamed in his honor.
