On this date in 1926, the St Louis Cardinals, led by player-manager Rogers Hornsby from Winters, Texas, won their first National League pennant. The celebration was cut short by the news that Hornsby's mother died in Texas. It was her wish that he remain with the team to complete the current series. The funeral was delayed until his return a week later. With Hornsby back in the lineup, the Cardinals went on to win the World Series in seven games against the New York Yankees.

On this date in 1974, Nolan Ryan pitched his third no-hitter for the California Angels, beating Minnesota 6-0. Before his career ended Ryan would pitch a major league record seven no-hitters.

Houston born, Mickey Newberry, Singer/Songwriter died on this date in 2002. Willie Nelson sang of him in "Lucenbach Texas". Newberry wrote songs records by artists as diverce as Elvis, Ray Charles, Joan Baez, Andy William, and Eddy Arnold. Kenny Rogers and the First Edition launched their career with his song "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) which reached No.5 in Billboards Top 100. Newberry had a top 40 hit in 1971 with An American Trilogy. He died on this date in Springfield, Oregon of lung disease.

On this date in 1835, about 150 Mexicans descend upon Gonzales to retrieve a cannon given to colonists at the DeWitt's Colony to assist in repelling Indian attacks. For the next several days, Texas' colonists refuse to relinquish the cannon. Eventually, on October 2nd, the Mexicans confront the Texans, and are repelled.

On this date in 1875, Texas Rangers are summoned to Mason County to intervene in the Mason County cattle wars, popularly known as the HooDoo wars. Already, there had been shootings, hangings, and out and out war between the German immigrants and local anglos, who felt it just fine to pick up stray cattle and sell them, even if the steers had already been branded. It would be another year and a half before the violence ends in Mason County.
