Esther Phillips dies at 48
LOS ANGELES CA  (1984)     On this date in 1984, R&B star Esther Phillips died from liver and kidney failure in Carson, California at the age of 48. Born in Galveston, she is probably best remember for chart hits "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes" and "And I Love Him."

Red Adair dead at 89
HOUSTON (2004)   On this date in 2004, Oil Well fire fighter, Red Adair died at a Houston hospital of natural causes. During his career, Adair fought hundreds of oil well fires, some which had burned out of control for months.
   Born in Houston, Adair also helped to put out the many fires set by Iraqi forces during the first Iraqi war. Anywhere in the world, under any conditions, where there was an oil well fire, Adair could expect a call.
   His life was depicted in a 1968 John Wayne movie called "Hellfighters".

Johnny Cash and Vivian Liberto wed
SAN ANTONIO   (1954)    While in Air Force training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio during 1950, Johnny Cash met Vivian Liberto. Four years later, on this date in 1954, and just one month after his discharge from the Air Force, Johnny and Vivian were married in San Antonio. Soon after, the couple moved to Memphis, Tennessee where Cash sold appliances.
   It was in Memphis that Cash auditioned at the Sam Phillips Sun Records studio, and made his first recording.
   Johnny and Vivian had four daughters, Rosanne, Kathleen, Cindy, and Tara. In 1967, due to a pressing touring schedule (300 concerts a year) and other problems the couple were divorced.
   On March 1, 1968, Johnny married his singing partner June Carter.
