BROWNSVILLE Click Here to follow "Mexican War" back in Time(1846)Click Here to follow "Mexican War" forward in Time  The United States Army under the command of General Zachary Taylor defeated the Mexican forces on this date in 1846, at the battle of Palo Alto, bringing to a quick end, it was hoped, the Mexican aggression against the United States.
   It wasn't until three days after the fighting ended that the United States Congress, responding to word of an earlier invasion by Mexico, formally declared war on our neighbors to the South.
   News traveled fast in those days.
