On this date in 1959, NFL Commissionere Bert Bell, with the blessing of Lamar Hunt, mentions the efforts to organize a new football league, the AFL, before a Congressional Committee. At the time Bell appeared before the Congressional hearing, not a single dime had been committed to the new AFL, and Hunt was struggled to get Los Angeles and New York interested in starting new franchises.
