Baseball Great, Mickey Mantle dies in Dallas

KANSAS CITY MO  (1888)   On this date in 1888, Frank J Hoffman, known as "The Texas Wonder" became the first Texan in history to play in the Major Leagues, having been signed by the Kansas City Blues. Hoffman finished the year with the Blues but did not return the following season.

DUBLIN   (1912)   On this date in 1912, future golf legend, Ben Hogan was born in Dublin, Texas.
  
Republic of Texas veteran William Oury born in VA
RICHMOND VA   (1817)   On this date in 1817, William Sanders Oury was born in Abington, Virginia. When he was 16, he came to Texas on his own, and served under Colonel Travis at the Alamo.
   On Febuary 29, 1836, Oury was sent as a courier to Sam Houston requesting more troops be sent to the Alamo in San Antonio. But before troops could be mustered, the battle was already over.
   Oury later fought in the Battle of San Jacinto, was a Texas Ranger, a prospector in the California Gold Rush, a Cattle Rancher, and Sheriff of Tuscon Arizona. He served in the Mexican War, survived the Mier expedition, the battles of Plum Creek and Bandera Pass.
    Oury died at his home in Tuscon in 1887.   

Mickey Mantle dead at 63
DALLAS  (1995)   On this date in 1995, Baseball legend, Mickey Mantle died of cancer at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. His father and grand-father both died young, and throughout his life, Mickey felt that his time on earth would also be cut short. Mickey was once quoted as saying "If I'd have known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself."
   Mantle played his entire 18 year career (1951-1968) with the New York Yankees, and 16 of those years on the All-Star team. Mantle holds the record for most World Series home runs (18), RBIs (40), runs (42), walks (43), extra-base hits (26), and total bases (123). Following his retirement, Mantle eventually settled in Dallas, where the Mickey Mantle foundation is currently located.
