French Recognition AUSTIN (1839) On this date in 1839, France officially recognizes the Republic of Texas. The French legation was soon located in Austin, and remains an historic sight today.
Centuries before, LaSalle, searching for the mouth of the Mississippi, overshot, and landed in Texas. Setting out by land, his crew continued the search, exploring most of coastal Texas. Being formally recognized by France, is only fitting, considering that France is one of the original countries to lay claim to Texas.
