Singing Cowboy, Gene Autry died on this date in 1998. Autry, born in Tioga, Texas, is best known for his Yodeling, long running television show (where he introduced the "Cowboy Code", and his hit country songs, including "Tumbling Tumbleweeds", "Back in the Saddle Again" and "Rudolf, the Red-nosed Reindeer". In his later life, he was owner of the Anaheim Angels baseball club.

On this date in 1967, Woody Guthrie died in Creedmore State Hospital in Queens, New York. Born in Oklahoma, he was raised in Pampa Texas during the dust bowl, where he wrote "So Long, It's been Good to Know You." His song "This Land is Your Land" is an American Classic.
On this date in 1954, Stevie Ray Vaughan was born in Dallas. He attended Kimball High School in Dallas. His music career and early death led to a cult following in Austin and throughout America. He had a top 20 hit with "Pride and Joy" and was nominated for a Grammy for "Rude Mood". He died in a helicopter crash returning from a concert in Wisconsin on Aug 27, 1990.

On this date in 1930, oilman Columbus Marion Joiner struck oil when the Daisy Bradford No. 3 blew near Henderson in East Texas. Other wells just miles away also began to strike oil. Soon, eveyone realized that they were all sitting on the largest oil field in the world.
