Miss Lillie Langtry
JERSEY, UK  (1853)Click Here to follow "Lillie Langtry" forward in Time  On this date in 1853, on the island of Jersey in England, actress and singer Emilie Charlotte le Breton was born the daughter of Richard le Breton.
At 20, she married landowner Edward Langtry, who possessed a yacht, which was a great attraction to her. In London society, she was renoun for her beauty, though she normally wore a solid black dress (her trademark) and no jewelry.
Emilie became popular in sketches and postcards, and sat for numerous artists at the time, typically with a flower, Amaryllis belladonna better known as the "Jersey lily" adorning her hair. Her portraits made her all the more popular in London society.
In 1881, Emilie (Lilly Lantry by now) took up acting, and soon toured the United States, to thrilled audiences. Her beauty attracted many admirers, of which, the most ardent of all was Judge Roy Bean of Texas.
In 1887, Emilie caught the eye of Albert, the Prince of Wales, and the two carried on an affair that lasted 2 years (1987-88), even to the point of the Prince allowing her to design their "Red House" (now Langry Manor) as a private getaway for the lovers.
In 1897 she and her husband left their Pont Street residence and moved to America, where they became U.S. citizens. By the time she stepped off the Sunset Limited in Lantry during her 1903-04 American tour, Judge Roy Bean had already died, having never met the object of his passions, Miss Lillie.
