At the University of Texas, Campbell rushed for a career 4,444 yards, 41 touchdowns, and won the 1977 Heismann Trophy.
In 1978, With the Houston Oilers, he was the NFL Rookie of the Year and League MVP. He led the Oilers to two AFC championship games in 1978 and 79 and except for those two AFC Championship game loses to Pittsburg, would have been in the Superbowl.
In mid-season, Campbell was traded to the New Orleans Saints, where he was reunited with his former coach Bum Phillips. He retired before the 1986 season.
